How SMILE differs
In SMILE, a femtosecond laser creates a thin, lens-shaped disc of tissue (the lenticule) inside the intact cornea — the shape of that disc encodes the vision correction. The surgeon then removes the lenticule through a 2–3 mm side incision. Because no flap is created and the surface is untouched, corneal nerves are better preserved (a theoretical dry-eye advantage) and the cornea’s structural strength is respected — one reason SMILE interests athletes and those with active lifestyles.
Strengths and limits
SMILE is well established for myopia and astigmatism within its measured range. It is not currently the procedure of choice for significant hyperopia, and very high corrections may exceed its design. Enhancements after SMILE are less straightforward than after LASIK, so accurate first-time planning matters. Candidacy still demands the full measurement battery: thickness, topography stability, tear film and retinal health.
The experience and recovery
After numbing drops, the femtosecond laser passes take under a minute; lenticule removal follows. Vision is typically hazy for the first hours, then clarifies rapidly over 1–3 days, with most patients functional within that window. Drops continue for weeks; the small incision heals invisibly. Activity restrictions are brief, with eye protection for sport as advised.
